Out of curiosity I stopped at the Calgary food bank yesterday and spoke to somebody who works there. I wanted to get an idea of who they're seeing come in since the parking lot was packed with newer model SUV's and even luxury vehicles.
I was surprised when she told me it's mostly new immigrants with jobs who appear to be financially secure. She said they come to the food bank as an alternative to buying groceries simply because it's available to them. She has grown extremely frustrated with the situation but is barred from turning anybody away. There are still many, many people in Canada who need access to the food bank and those who don't are clogging up the system. Apparently food bank recipients can select the food donated to them and because these new immigrants have cars they arrive before the people who actually need it and end up taking the better quality food.
The girl I spoke with is an immigrant herself and is disgusted with the behavior she's seeing.
It's infuriating to know this is happening. I'm not anti-immigration by any means but we have to draw the line somewhere. I didn't read this dogshit Global article but I can guarantee it's a smear piece to make Alberta and Danielle Smith look like a bunch of racist rednecks. But that couldn't be further from the truth. We have a serious problem here and we have to find a way to fix it asap."
