Day 318 of why shouldn’t every day be detrans awareness day?! When it comes to this new cohort of trans-identified teens, many simply don’t like themselves so they invent someone new. Reinventing of self prior to this ideology involved dying of hair, cutting hair or parting it different, wearing different clothing or accessories, trying on different styles. These were superficial changes that could easily be changed back or morphed into the next trend. But it wasn't a complete rejection of self or sex.
Adolescence is hard for everyone. It is a time of discomfort and uncertainty. This new cohort falls into a trans-identified group either at school or online. Their newly invented self becomes "trans" and is celebrated by friends, teachers and our government. They are told they are brave.
Today’s reinvention of self comes with not only a new name and look, but also irreversible medical procedures. These are encouraged and necessary to become the new you and the goal becomes to kill off the old you. Your old name even becomes your "dead name." You are promised this will alleviate discomfort and self-hate. For many, it doesn't. It increases it. #detransawarenessday
