The New Brunswick Coalition for Transgender Rights (NBCTR) was created in response to the increase in anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-Transgender rhetoric and legislation in the US and Canada. This issue became a threat to transgender children and teenagers in New Brunswick through the reduction in protections outlined in the province’s policy on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in education, also known as Policy 713.

Why does this Facebook group, and this Coalition, exist?
The rise of such strategic misinformation and unethical political manipulation is known to be an element of fascism. Fascism functions by targeting one or more ethnic, gender, sexual, or other minorities, and blaming them for a wide variety of actual, but unrelated, social issues. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these targeted groups included a) the Jewish and Romani (or Roma) peoples, b) the entire LGBT+ community, c) any people with any form of physical or mental “disability” or mental health challenges, and d) Anarchists, Socialists, Communists, and all forms of academics and scientists whose expertise can reveal the misinformation and manipulation on which all fascism is built.

What does that have to do with you?
Now, due to social issues that stem from overall economic instability, rising unemployment and poverty, declining birth rates in wealthy countries, rising birth rates in poorer ones, climate change, climate migration, and so on - all caused by the unsustainable impacts of Industrialism and Capitalism - we find ourselves in the phase of fascism that seeks to blame these issues on the very concept of gender and sexual diversity, and as a result, target and attack the LGBTQ+ community… again, just like in the 1930s.
The other thing that is very well understood about fascism is that it requires a constant supply of manufactured enemies for it to continue to spread and consume. To accomplish this goal, its list of scapegoats must also grow endlessly, eventually targeting everyone who doesn’t match the ever shrinking definition of “one of us”.
While non-LGBTQ+ people may not be the primary target of fascist dehumanization NOW, it’s only a matter of time until that changes. So it’s in almost everyone’s best interests to oppose fascism NOW, while it’s only managed to take moderate control of our institutions and mechanisms of government, education, and communication (such as it has with many forms of news and social media).
So now, please join us in exploring ideas, strategies, and methods for fighting anti-trans rhetoric and legislation, and the larger threat of fascism in general, so we can keep this newest generation of fascists from completing the work of their nazi predecessors.
